Between 1980 and 1991, the generous support that I received from my New Zealand sponsors enabled me to not only get an education but to live in a safe place far away from the crime and slums of Nairobi.
The links in this website will take you to some of the press coverage of my story. You will see photos of my meetings with my New Zealand sponsors and friends and you will also be able to listen to my radio interview with Simon and Gary of MORE FM based in Christchurch, New Zealand . A video clip of my interview with TV3 has now been included.
I hope after going through this website, you can make a contribution that will go towards building Kapiti School in Kenya. There are still thousands of children in Kenya who, without any fault of their own, may not receive an education that would help them change their lives and become people who can help improve the situation in Africa .The future of Africa lies with its children and by educating a child in Africa, you will be directly helping Africa to confront its challenges.
The school will be located on the Kapiti Plains (50 kms south of Nairobi city). The local Maasai community leaders have been very generous to offer us acres of land at a very special rate. The school has also being allowed free access to the greener river valley area that the community livestock gets water from. We hope we can raise the required funds to pay for the land so that building can start. Some of the land will be turned into a school farm where the school food will be grown.
At full intake, the school will provide a good local education to two hundred mixed pupils of between seven and fourteen years old. Some of the children from the most disadvantaged backgrounds will be taken into the boarding school.
The Ministry of Education in Kenya has been very supportive and we have been promised five government paid teachers once school opens its doors to the first children. Suggestions have already been made that young Kiwis would be interested in volunteering as teachers for up to two years at a time! With your support, the first school term can start in January 2011.
Kindly send us your contact details through our contact link so that we can update you on the progress of the school construction.
A quote that was written at my high school's assembly hall entrance (Starehe Boys' Centre) continues to be the main pillar of my drive to assist other children…"From those to whom much has been given, much will be required".
I thank you for your contribution.
Kind regards,
Peter
